Biography

Janet Izzo is a registered nurse in the State of Minnesota. She is a member of the Minnesota Nurses Association and the American Nursing Association. In her book, Hotel Hennepin, she relates the stories of her career in nursing within the walls of a large county hospital. Before working in her chosen field of Obstetrics with women and babies, Janet “paid her dues” by working in general Medical/Surgical units as well as in the specialties of Urology and Gastroenterology. She is also a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and has written about some of her cases in Hotel Hennepin.

Janet was born in the small northern Minnesota town of Sauk Centre and grew up in both Richfield, Minnesota and Miami Springs, Florida. Her dad was employed by Northwest Airlines which gave her the opportunity to travel, live in different states and meet people from every walk of life.

"I have always enjoyed meeting and talking with people. I think my ‘gift of gab’ came directly from my dad. He could talk to anyone about any topic. He loved people and taught me by his example to appreciate what others had to offer in the way of their knowledge, their opinions and their spirits.”

Since she was a child, Janet always knew she would be a nurse one day. When other little girls were riding bikes and playing house, Janet was in her make-shift hospital in the basement of her home…nursing dolls in and out of medical emergencies, medicating them with concoctions she invented in her mother’s kitchen. One doll received so many injections and treatments, she had to be thrown away. She had rotted from the inside out!

When she grew too old to play with her dolls, Janet became a candy striper (volunteer) at a local hospital. By twenty one years old, she was an operating room technician…a slight detour on her way to becoming a nurse. Three children (and a husband) later, Janet entered nursing school. In 1987, she graduated from college and passed her Minnesota State Board exams. Her dream of becoming a nurse had finally come true. She was “thirty something.”

During her college years, Janet wrote a monthly column for her school paper entitled “Over the Hill”. It was dedicated to students over the age of thirty who were still considered “undergrads” attempting to obtain degrees. She had always loved writing and this gave her a voice and the momentum she needed to pursue that interest. She has never stopped.

With the release of her book, Hotel Hennepin, Janet Izzo is becoming a popular and in demand speaker for nursing students in colleges and universities. Her focus is to educate, inspire and entertain. She is passionate about the nursing profession and her enthusiasm is obvious.

"Nurses Can Make the Difference" is Janet’s themed message and she believes it with her whole heart!
